You begin every hole you ever play at the tee. If you’re having trouble driving the ball, then you’re starting every single hole playing catch up. You might rescue a bunch of pars with a great putt, but you might well be going for birdies if your drive had found the fairway.

For the majority of players, consistency and long golf drives are far from being impossible. Hitting long golf drives is a lot easier than most players recognize.

With modern drivers and golf balls, long drives come from hitting the ball on a high launch angle and getting the best angle of descent. It isn’t about low carrying drives any longer. Long drives now come from high launch and long carry.

With high swing speeds and on-center striking, golf pros can manage low lofted drivers and nevertheless get height on the ball. For most club players though, playing drivers with extra loft will encourage both distance and consistency. Most average players would do best with drivers in the 11 14 degree loft range.

Playing the proper shaft is crucial when it comes to hitting consistently long golf drives. The shaft has a vital part to play in all your clubs but the effects of playing the wrong shaft in your driver are magnified.

Most golfers play drivers with graphite shafts. Unfortunately, many golfers also play shafts that are too stiff for their swing speeds. That probably has a lot to do with the most common fault in golf, the slice. Use a shaft that is too stiff and you’ll almost certainly suffer from a slice.

In part, that has to do with the widely held fallacy that graphite shafts are too whippy, too soft. That might have been the case 10 years ago, but new graphite shaft manufacturing methods have given us outstanding models with very consistent playing characteristics.

The majority of golfers would get better results from fitting a light-weight, medium torque shaft in their drivers. Using a light-weight shaft will increase your swing speed and you’ll be able to load a medium torque shaft better during your swing, delivering more energy into your drives. Longer drives come from higher energy.

Launch angles are also affected by the rigidity of the shaft tip. Your launch angles will suffer if you use a shaft which is too tip-stiff. Launching the ball on the best angle is where a long golf drive comes from. Keep in mind, we’re after piercing flights not low stingers.

Playing the correct combination of driver head and shaft characteristics is crucial to hitting long golf drives. Your clubs should help your game, not fight against it.
